Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Devils Tower, WY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Devils Tower which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
