Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Fort Washakie, WY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Fort Washakie that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
