Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Sheridan, WY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sheridan which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
