Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Veteran, WY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Veteran which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
