Drug Rehab Berkeley, California

The city of Berkeley is located in the state of California, on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay. Berkeley is located in Alameda County, and has an estimated population of around 113,000. The city is home to the oldest campus of the University of California system ? UC Berkeley. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Graduate Theological Union are also located in the city, a city which is one of the most politically liberal in the nation.

Because Berkeley is one of the more liberal communities in the state and nation, there is a drug culture there that has become somewhat acceptable. When this happens, no matter how seemingly innocent, this leaves the door open for unanticipated problems with addiction and dependence even if someone's drug use is initiated through what is considered a non-addictive drug in many circles such as marijuana. This couldn't be farther from the truth however, as there are studies that well document the dependence inducing qualities of marijuana, and the fact that it is a gateway to other more addictive drugs of abuse. When someone does develop a drug or alcohol problem in Berkeley, and it progresses to the point of dependence, it is very unlikely they are going to be able to fix the problem on their own. Yet there are answer and solutions available to Berkeley residents, no matter how severe or mild the problem seems. There are programs that provide outpatient treatment, as well as inpatient and residential programs. Inpatient and residential programs in Berkeley are a more appropriate setting for individuals whose problem is more advanced, such as a daily reliance to drugs or alcohol. In these instances, a very intensive course of treatment is required, in an environment that doesn't trigger cravings.

Different Types Of Rehabilitation in Berkeley, CA.

As you can imagine, not every addiction treatment facility in Berkeley is the same. In fact, each of the centers you come across will have their own unique notion as to what excellent treatment is all about.

Similarly, the treatments applied at a facility will be dependent upon the original philosophy the center is founded upon. These protocols, however, can be combined in various ways. As an example, you might see spiritually-based addiction treatment centers that also use evidence-based therapies.

In many cases, you may find that every drug and alcohol treatment facility will emphasize a single approach. This is how most of these rehabs are classified. That said, the most common types of drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs include:

1. Evidence-Based Programs

Evidence-based or Proof-based drug and alcohol treatment programs usually base their program on the science of addiction treatment. And because of this, they will extend care that is mostly focused on the mental and emotional in addition to adjunctive therapies that are research and scientifically based and is founded on what has been found to work for different types of addicts.

At these rehabs, the recovery protocols used often change regularly depending on the actual results from the most recent findings in science and research.

2. Faith-Based Facilities

Faith-based alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs, on the other hand, are focused on the spiritual aspects of rehab. As a direct result, most of them lean on the twelve step philosophies in combination with religious practice and ritual - such as praying.

The overriding belief in a majority of these facilities is that sobriety comes from God. In the United States of America - a predominantly Christian region - most religious-based rehabs are Christian. However, there are some alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs that focus on treating people from other religions and faiths.

For the most case, you will find that these type of treatment rehabs are paid for by religious entity - with the recovery programs run by the Salvation Army providing an excellent example. That being said, most religious-based programs also provide abstinence-based programs.

3. Twelve-step Based Programs

Most of these programs base their recovery protocols and options on the twelve-step programs in addition to the information produced by Alcoholics Anonymous and its various offshoots.

Because of this, most of these facilities make you participate in meetings, group work, and meet up with a sponsor. During this time, you will regularly work on the steps that will enable you to deal with your addiction from the 12-step perspective.

Some of the programs in Berkeley that are based on the twelve steps may also offer other treatment modalities - such as individual psychotherapy.

4. Pharmacotherapy-Based Centers

Medicine-based centers view substance use and addiction issues as conditions that should be handled in a medical setting - in a similar was you would handle other conditions such as diabetes.

To this end, they often write a prescription for such medicines as Suboxone and methadone for the management of addiction.

These kinds of alcohol and drug treatment programs are, however, sometimes thought of as harm-reducing because they might pass on your dependence from one drug to a different drug. For example, the Suboxone might replace heroin and opoids.

However, there are medicines that have been proven of deterring active substance abuse. For example, Antabuse makes and alcoholic sick when they drink. As a result, this treatment approach is useful at managing addiction and reducing harm.

5. Other Programs

Some drug and alcohol treatment programs do not fit into any of the categories we have discussed above. These facilities offer remedies that are not founded on any evidence-based treatment methods or protocols.

Alternatively, these rehabs suggest that their way of handling addiction issues is unique to them. However, they are open to doubt in the sense that they will probably not be able to provide you with proof of success or any other evidence to back up the claims they make.

6. Harm-Reduction Based Facilities

These are alcohol and drug rehab programs that hold the belief that individuals suffering from addiction and a variety of substance use disorders are not completely capable of abstinence or that they do not want to stop using drugs and alcohol entirely.

These drug and alcohol rehabs, instead, go with the belief that addicted individuals can use less of the substance in question. Based on this belief, they claim that it is alright to enjoy a glass or so of wine or beer during lunch and will teach the clients how to do this with success. In the process, you may learn how to keep a lid on your addiction while still allowing for some substance use.

Many harm-reduction drug and alcohol rehab facilities are found away from the reaches of conventional addiction treatment centers. One good example would be a needle exchange program.

The intention behind these programs is that not every addicted person is ready for or wants guidance. For this reason, they are directed at trying to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis and HIV by providing IV drug users with clean needles free of charge. In doing so, these programs reduce the risk of disease transmittal that occurs from drug abuse, even though addicts continue to use as they did prior to the intervention.
