The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and obtain referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.
By way of TRICARE, military members can obtain drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Sitka. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved treatment center, and there are time limits as to how long military members are allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually allowed. Additionally, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis.
