Clients referred from the court for drug treatment are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to accept treatment rather than face jail time, other charges, fines, etc. Although this is most common with first time offenders, it can be offered at any point such as while the person is already incarcerated. There are various types of rehab programs that offenders can be referred to, and it usually depends on what is available in Alberta and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.
There are rehab facilities that work exclusively with the courts to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are typically state funded or are available at little or no cost to the client. Additionally, there are also private addiction treatment programs that might be approved by the court if there is a specific type of treatment that the client needs or desires that a different program can't fulfill. The client's attorney can push for such alternatives to the judge for permission. There are even substance abuse rehab facilities that provide services from the jails and prisons themselves, in which case clients are often in a better position for reduced sentences or other leniencies when enrolling in substance abuse rehabilitation services while serving their sentence for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
