Medicare is a federal health insurance program which helps pay for health benefits for individuals living in the U.S. who are either disabled or 65 and older. For individuals that do have Medicare and need addiction treatment in Alberta, Medicare can pay for various treatment programs and recovery services. Medicare comes in different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering different types of medical care.
Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A covers inpatient addiction treatment, and up to 60 days in treatment without a co-pay but individuals will have to pay a deductible. Medicare only covers a total of 190 days of inpatient care, this applies to the person's lifetime.
Part B (Medical Insurance) ? Medicare Part B pays up to 80% of the costs for outpatient substance abuse treatment. This includes outpatient care, therapy, treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety and medications administered by clinics. It also covers professional interventions.
Part C (Medicare-approved Private Insurance) Medicare Part D is an option for people who want additional coverage in addition to what the other parts of Medicare have to offer. Individuals who have Part C can have more options available to them, but out-of-pocket costs and coverage is different and may be more expensive.
Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D covers drug and alcohol addiction medications. Including medications used for withdrawal symptoms during detoxification as well as those required for maintenance therapy such as buprenorphine or methadone.
