One of the out-patient treatment options for individuals in Cuba battling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some centers and doctors are authorized to give certain meds to opioid dependent clients, many of which are opioid-based also and are addiction. In low enough doses the user does not feel high but also does not have acute cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med administered for this reason, but there are other choices to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the drug, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the drug is around $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based drug, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone that can only be administered in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is around three hundred dollars /month for the generic version of the med. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a med which reverses the effects of opiates. An individual consuming this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken daily, and is priced approximately $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional drug taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned here it is an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents an individual from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month.
