The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retired military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can pick a primary doctor and obtain referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.

Through TRICARE, members of the military can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Elba. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various substance abuse recovery services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detoxification are restricted to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly allowed. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other primary rehabilitation services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
