The military currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to non-military health care providers within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can pick a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.
By way of TRICARE, military members can obtain drug and alcohol treatment services in Stuttgart. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other various substance abuse recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there will most likely be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but inpatient services for detoxification are limited to 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time limits as to how long military insurance carriers will be allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically accepted. In additional to this, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has completed prior treatment services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
