Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Arivaca, AZ.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Arivaca which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
