Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Blue, AZ.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Blue that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
