Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Bouse, AZ.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Bouse that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
