Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Catalina, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Catalina which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
