American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail time. So as you can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Central face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who reside in secluded locations. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas commonly are not set up to provide strategic planning designed to meet the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which treatment services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
