Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Fort Mcdowell, AZ.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Fort Mcdowell that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
