Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Naco, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Naco that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
