Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - New River, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in New River which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
