Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Red Rock, AZ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Red Rock which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
