The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, along with any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to non-military health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can select a primary care physician and get referrals to organizations that offer specialty care.

Through TRICARE, members of the military can receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Carson. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will require pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but inpatient services for detoxification are restricted to 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are allowed to stay in treatment.
