American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Caspar face is access to comprehensive and effective treatment facilities, particularly those who reside in secluded locations. Facilities providing substance abuse treatment services in rural areas commonly are not capable of offering support designed to meet the needs and demands of this unique demographic including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are available to them through which facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
