American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Chinese Camp face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who reside in secluded locations. Programs offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas may not be able to offer support designed to meet the needs of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to determine which services are an option for them and through which treatment facilities, and which will be most effective for their scenario. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
