American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail time.
