One of the out-patient rehab options for people in Five Points who are struggling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed centers and doctors are authorized to give certain meds to opioid dependent individuals, many of which are opioids also and are habit forming. Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient medical center licensed to dispense the drug, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the med is approximately $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be given in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is around three hundred dollars /month for the generic of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. Someone taking this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and costs approximately $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned here it's an opioid blocker and is not an opiate. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
