American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Hyampom face is access to effective services, particularly those who live in secluded locations. Facilities offering substance abuse treatment services in rural areas may not be able to offer strategic planning designed to meet the needs and demands of this special group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their language.
