American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges.
