American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Mather face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who reside in secluded regions. Programs providing drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas commonly are not capable of offering strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs of this distinctive demographic including addiction treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are an option for them and through which rehab facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
