American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Mojave face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who live in rural areas. Programs offering substance abuse rehab services in rural regions often are not set up to provide support designed to meet the needs and demands of this unique demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can consult with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which treatment services are an option for them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
