American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Potrero face is access to effective services, particularly those who live in secluded areas. Programs offering addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be set up to provide strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including substance abuse treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which services are an option for them and through which facilities, and which ones will be most effective for their scenario. There have been many grants offered in recent years to cover these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
