American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Valley Center face is access to effective treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Programs offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas may not be capable of offering strategic planning designed to meet the needs of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which treatment services are an option for them and through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
