Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Bethune, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Bethune which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
