Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Burlington, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Burlington which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
