Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Cascade, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Cascade that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
