Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Englewood, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Englewood which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
