Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Johnstown, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Johnstown which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
