Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Kersey, CO.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Kersey that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
