Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Las Animas, CO.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Las Animas that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
