Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Lewis, CO.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Lewis which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
