Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Ouray, CO.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Ouray which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
