Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Winter Park, CO.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Winter Park that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
