Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Ballouville, CT.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Ballouville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
