Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Bozrah, CT.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Bozrah which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
