Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Marion, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Marion that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
