Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Orange, CT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Orange which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
