Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Wallingford, CT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Wallingford that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
