The military currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can choose a primary care physician and obtain referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.

By way of TRICARE, military members can receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Ferndale. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other treatment services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are allowed to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually accepted.
