The armed forces currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can choose a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that offer specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can receive drug and alcohol treatment services in Kaneohe. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there will most likely be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are restricted to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are allowed to remain in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly accepted. In additional to this, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other treatment services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
