Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Albia, IA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Albia which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
