Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Armstrong, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Armstrong which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
